  1. Description of Runtime Capability Runtime is the ability for people to execute a Simio model without investing in that design-time version of Simio. Simio imposes no limits to the number of models you can distribute or the number of people you distribute to. And you are free to distribute outside of your organization if you choose. There is no charge for any such distribution. Two runtime modes are available: Interactive Runtime Uses Simio Evaluation Version which is available free to anyone and may be used without activation. It provides the ability to load a model, run it interactively to view the animation, and even change the model at will. Model changes cannot be saved nor is the capability provided to run experiments or execute custom user-written steps and elements. Only Simio Team Edition is capable of creating models that will run in Interactive Runtime. Full Runtime Uses Simio Express Edition. In addition to the substantial modeling features built into Express, it provides the ability to load and run models, save model changes, run experiments, and execute custom user-written steps and elements. Design and Team Editions can create models for use with Full Runtime.
  2. Hello, I have a question regarding the compatibility between the Simio Enterprise and Team editions. Specifically, in my company we are developing using the Simio Enterprise Edition, and we would like to know the impact of sharing our models with a Client that has only the Team Edition. How does this work? Could they still open, edit and save the model we provide? What happens to Enterprise-specific functionalities in this situation? Just to be clear, I know already that these versions are compatible in the sense that, when using the Team Edition, one can open and run models that were created using the Enterprise Edition. My question relates specifically to editing/updating the simulation models, and saving them of course. Thanks in advance, and best regards, Ruben
  3. The Simio product and its documentation is obviously created in English but we would like to expand that availability. Software As of this writing (April 2013) the Simio software is currently available in English and German. But the software has been designed from the start to be translatable. In fact we can quickly create a Google translation in any language, but unfortunately while that can be a good start of a translation, it's accuracy is not good enough to serve as a finished product. So we are looking for any volunteers who would like to see Simio in their native language. Textbooks We currently have book translations in Spanish (both books), Portuguese, Mongolian, and Italian. We are looking for additional translations and the translator(s) will be acknowledged as co-authors on the translated edition. Royalties will also be shared, but given the relatively small quantities and low book price your motivation should probably be mainly "fame and glory". Training and Other Materials Volunteers have also translated selected training and other supporting materials. We are always anxious to have this type of user participation to help the broader community. Existing and new materials will be available in this forum. Software Features A few features have been added to the software to make it easier to use in other cultures. One such feature is a setting to control the separator character used in CSV files which now defaults to your systems culture setting. Please let us know if additional such features are necessary. If you or your team are interested in helping with any of the above, please contact me directly. (dsturrock@simio.com)
  4. Hello there, I'm new Simio. Currently, the company looking for a solution to add some simulation features to our products. After learning your fantastic videos, I think that Simio Simulation and Scheduling Software is suit for our requirement but few questions: 1)Does Simio Personal Edition user have a chance to experience Simio Portal Edition? I'd like to know more about how to integrate SImio with our SAP MES - based project. 2)The company's customs include Ford and DANA as well, so I'm really interested in the video like "Ford Valencia Plant" ( ) and wondering if can get the example model or something else like that. I'd like to take look closer and show that to the team (not just a video). It's may helpful to convince them to make a final decision . Thanks in advance.
  5. In Enterprise Edition you can simply enable logging and you will get comprehensive logs of resource state and usage. In Design and Team editions you can use a Write step in an add-on process to write any information you like to a file.
  6. Ok, good to know. I’ve come across the Academic/Commercial divide with example models here on the forums, so I wasn’t sure about between other license types. I have a related feature request: it would be nice to open/run/save a model with a specific license type (“below” the license in use). The example use case is that I am developing a model for a customer who has Team Edition. I have Enterprise Edition, but I want to make sure that I am not using any Enterprise-only features so that I can guarantee full functionality of the model upon delivery. Thanks! -Adam
  7. What happens if a model built with Enterprise-only features is opened with Team Edition? Specifically, I have many states in tables for collecting outputs in my model. Can someone with only Team edition still run the model? Will they get error messages? Will they even be able to open the file? Thanks! Adam
  8. Simio models are compatible up and down the product line (except between academic and commercial). In general, when moving to a lower capability product the model will still work, but features may not be visible and/or changeable. For example: --When an Enterprise model is run in Team edition, you will not be able to see the logs and Gantt charts. --When a Design model is run in Express, you can still run the processes, but you will not be able to see or change them. I don't know the specifics of the table states availability, but I expect that the model will still run fine, but the table states will not be configurable and may possibly not be visible.
  9. That does not help and is in fact inaccurate. Academic is primarily just a licensing mode and is essentially Team or Enterprise edition with a different file format. Design/Team/Enterprise is a functionality level. Neither of these should have any effect on this capability. Please include a screen shot of the missing or not-working feature so we have a better idea what you are talking about.
  10. There should be no difference in this area between Academic and Commercial or between Design and Team Edition. Please include a screen shot so we have a better idea what you are talking about.
  11. Many of you are unaware of our development process. And in fact you don't really need to know about it beyond the fact that every time you look we have lot's more features than when you last looked. There are many reasons for this including an incredible engineering team and high customer involvement. But a significant part is due to our agile development process involving builds and sprints. Although we have extensive manual testing, our testing foundation is a suite of well over 5,000 automated tests applied each time before anyone can make any change to the software. If that change passes the test suite, it is commited and is automatically compiled, retested, and a releasable image suitable for distribution is created. The result of that process is called a "Build". Our recently passed milestone is that we have now created more than 10,000 releasable builds. Obviously those do not all end up in public hands. What we refer to as a "Sprint" is simply a three week planning cycle that consists of multiple builds. During each sprint we do additional manual tests as well as updating documentation and other product aspects like SimBits. At the end of each sprint we have tested, documented, distributable software including new functionality. Most customers don't download and install every Sprint. But we encourage you to do so when convenient so that you are always working with the best software, documentation and examples we can deliver. Most sprints are posted to the Simio Insiders download area. The public releases are updated approximately quarterly. Here are some of our major milestones and why we so rapidly pulled ahead of the competition: Sprint 1 – May 2008 (Initial public posting) Release 1.21 May 2009 (Initial release) Release 2.31 Dec 2009 (Major Release) Release 3.42 Aug 2010 (Major Release) Release 4.58 July 2011 (Major Release) Release 4.64 Dec 2011 (Enterprise Edition) Release 4.68 Apr 2012 (2012-13 Academic Year) Release 5.80 Nov 2012 (Major Release) Latest build is 5.87.10046 (as of this writing) 10,046 tested, installable Builds created We celebrated in the usual understated Simio fashion with the development team going out for gourmet coffee. Then back to work on the next sprint .
  12. I suggest to integrate the Crane lib into Commercial Design & Team Edition, while not for Education, Express Edition.
  13. You should try and stay up to date with Simio. If this is a licensing difference (I am running Team Edition)... then that is too bad. The following screenshots should show what I did though.
  14. Thanks for clearing it up. I did a quick forum search and this was the only relevant post I found. I was a bit disappointed in the stance on experiments. I would have thought the ability to run, but not create experiments to be more fair (for Team edition and higher). I guess we are either going to have to drop support for experiments in our team models, or buy an express license.
  15. The post you quoted was over 3 years old (now updated a bit) and lots of things have changed since then including we moved to a new (.com) web site, renamed the existing Enterprise edition to Team Edition, then a year later came out with a new product named Team Edition. Somewhere along the way we introduced a new product named Express Edition which, among other things, can serve as a full runtime that supports experimentation. Here is an excerpt from our current documentation: Description of Runtime Capability Runtime is the ability for people to execute a Simio model without investing in that design-time version of Simio. Simio imposes no limits to the number of models you can distribute or the number of people you distribute to. And you are free to distribute outside of your organization if you choose. There is no charge for any such distribution Two runtime modes are available: Interactive Runtime Uses Simio Evaluation Version which is available free to anyone and may be used without activation. It provides the ability to load a model, run it interactively to view the animation, and even change the model at will. Model changes cannot be saved nor is the capability provided to run experiments or execute custom user-written steps and elements. Only Simio Team Edition (or higher) is capable of creating models that will run in Interactive Runtime. Full Runtime Uses Simio Express Edition. In addition to the substantial modeling features built into Express, it provides the ability to load and run models, save model changes, run experiments, and execute custom user-written steps and elements. Design, Team, and Enterprise Editions can create models for use with Full Runtime.
  16. As you have discovered (and I discussed in my post above), running an experiment puts Simio in its fastest run mode possible. And in this mode it will automatically distribute the replications and scenarios across all of your processors/cores. This alone can provide dramatic speedups. If you have Team Edition, you can actually extend that to use spare processing power in your work group. So if you have 4 quad-processor machines available on your local network, you can run up to 16 simultaneous replications or scenarios. In terms of modeling, the most dramatic improvement you could make is to build your model at a lower level. The model you described is simple to model entirely in a single process with steps: (begin) - Seize - Delay - Release - Tally - (end) with the process triggered by a Timer element and using TallyStatistics elements for any token-related statistics like Time In System. You would not even need to create any entities, it could all be done using tokens which are smaller and faster. The process approach should be many times faster.
  17. Yes. Runtime is a capability for a model to be run by someone who does not have a Simio license. Let's review some version capability: -- Models created in Simio Design Edition can be run by anyone with a commercial license, but cannot be run by someone with a academic or evaluation software. -- Models created in Simio Team or Enterprise Edition can be run by anyone with a commercial license, but can also be run by someone with evaluation software. -- Evaluation software is similar to the commercial version except that it cannot save models and can only load models that are prepared using Enterprise Edition. And it cannot execute programmatic interfaces (an advanced feature). Evaluation software can be freely downloaded from the Simio.com web site. So if you use Simio Team or Enterprise Edition, you can distribute your models to anyone else and they can run the models using software that they can legally use for free. The runtime user can load your model, run it interactively to view the animation, and even change the model at will. But they cannot save any model changes. To do that requires a commercial version. You (the model builder) can further restrict what the runtime user can do, if you wish, by protecting parts of your original model. So if your desire is to distribute a model for experimentation in the interactive mode only, you can protect the model so they can only change only the properties that you expose. Simio imposes no limits to the number of models you can distribute or the number of people you distribute to. And you are free to distribute outside of your organization if you choose. And there is no charge for any such distribution.
