Simio Academic Simulation Products

Our intent is to make top quality simulation software available for educational use at no charge. Both products below are the functional equivalent of Simio Design Edition. They are both full featured including discrete and continuous modeling, code-free object creation, object library development, and 3D animation. All academic products are limited to non-commercial use by accredited institutions whose primary business is teaching. Our academic products put no limits on the size or complexity of models that can be built.

Simio Academic Version

Academic institutions are eligible for Simio at no charge. The normal cost of Simio Academic Edition is 20% of the retail price or about $2000 US, however we provide full-capability software at no charge to academic institutions that teach Simio and publicly acknowledge the grant. We will provide the licenses you need for installation in classrooms and computer labs as well as any other institutional computers. This software has no model size limits and is functionally equivalent to Simio Design Edition including discrete and continuous modeling, object library development, and 3D animation.

Simio Student Version

Students may use the Academic Version installed in institution labs and classrooms at no charge. Most institutions will be able to supply the Academic Version to their students.

We also provide full capability software for undergraduate and graduate student use on their personal (non-university) computers while enrolled in a registered simulation course. We will supply the institution with a link where students can obtain their own software and activations for a nominal fee. The activations supplied to individual students are for 12 months. This software also has no model size or functional limits and is equivalent to Simio Design Edition.

Limitations for Educational Use

The Academic and Student Versions may not be used for commercial work. The intent of this program is to make top quality, state-of-the-art software available for academic use at little or no cost. We feel that companies who realize financial benefit from simulation should pay fair market value for any software and services required. To that end, academic software may not be used to directly benefit a commercial entity.

We understand that student projects often involve commercial systems and we support that. How results are used seems a reasonable way to differentiate commercial applications. Simulation results consist of the models, animations, reports, summarized results, and other similar artifacts of a simulation project. If all simulation results are publicly available (as in typical academic-focused projects), then the project is typically considered to be non-commercial.

If your project is commercial, then we still have a solution for you. You may use Simio Design Edition or Team Edition. You can find out more about these on our products page. We recommend using the Team Edition so that you may distribute the project to others for use in runtime mode.
